I’ve owned my home since July 2002. When I bought the home, I had a termite company inspect and treat (?…drilled holes in front & back porch & areas of the slab foundation and-I think-put in chemicals to keep termites away). I’ve never had termites, and I continue to pay a little under 0 for a yearly inspection by the same company. This year, the cost has been raised to 0. Is it worth it to keep having the yearly inspection when all the guy appears to do is walk around looking at the inside and outside of my home. What do I need to know about termite control so that I can justify continuing to pay for this service?  Read More →

We have a hydronic in-floor heating system in a slab subfloor that has an engineered wood floor glued on top without a seperating membrane in between. We like to change now to a tile floor. Trying to take the wood floor up we noticed this to be very piece meal like. That glue does not come off easy and I like to find out if anybody has any knowledge in this. Can I leave the wood floor in and install tile over it or do I lose too much heat? Any suggestions on how to remove the wood floor and glue? What probelms with either way?  Read More →

At a time when the only kitchen recycling that seems to be going on is the regurgitation of naff TV programme ideas for celebrity cooking, kitchen challenges, cooking for idiots, rotating dinner parties in the homes of various insane weirdo’s or restaurant rants by potty-mouthed ex footballers, the concept of genuinely eco-friendly and ethical kitchen accessories and home furnishings may seem horribly twee and middle class. Those of us who enjoy cooking but would also like to do our bit to save resources and the environment can feel unbelievably superior and smug by choosing eco kitchen accessories that once had a former existence. Recycled cast iron cookware is also readily available...

Sorry about the length… One thing that seems to be prevalent these days in Western society is the new age fascination with east Asian traditions, wisdom and spiritualism. Glossy magazines extol the virtues of Chinese herbal medicines. Celebrities endorse oriental exercise regimes, Musicians worshipping eastern mythology, Gurus give out advice on our lives and predict futures. Alt therapies like Acupuncture and reiki stones are touted as cures for everything from headaches to cancer. These things represent an industry of billions of dollars/euros/pounds, Speaking as perhaps a sour and cynical rationalist, BS is BS,regardless of where it comes from. Some of these practices may indeed hold...
